Local languages in Barcelona

In Barcelona, there are two official languages: Catalan and Spanish. The overwhelming majority of Barcelona’s residents consider themselves fully bilingual and there are more and more people who understand and speak English and other international languages.

If you are interested in learning Catalan, there are free courses for foreigners offered by the City Council and the entity is more important than the Consorci per a la Normalizacio Lingüística (www.cpnl.cat); in the center, basic Catalan courses are free and advanced ones are at a very affordable price.

Some schools also teach Spanish and Catalan. There are also community centers and associations that teach both languages but are no formal courses.
